ANOTHER £IOOO FOR RELIEF OF UNEMPLOYED.
CITY COUNCIL WILL PROVIDE TOTAL OF £6OOO. Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P., chairman of the executive of the Citizens’ Unemployment Committee, and of the Finance Committee of the City Council, stated 3 r esterday that the amount of work to be provided by the City Council in connection wfith the relief of unemployment was about £15,000. Of that amount it was proposed that, the City Council should find £SOOO, which would be used as a subsidy on public subscriptions to the same amount, the Government also subsidising £1 for £l. Mr Sullivan stated to-day that he had been looking into the matter more closely, and thought now that the council’s contribution towards unemployment could be brought up to £6OOO, and if the public would find £6OOO in subscriptions to the Citizens’ Unemployment Fund, it would, plus the Government subsidy, make about £IB,OOO worth of work available. This, of course, would be dependant on the public subscribing its share, and the Government subsidy being .secured. Mr Sullivan added that he had made arrangements with the City Engineer (Mr A. R. Galbraith) and the Superintendent of Parks and Gardens (Mr J. Young) that preparation for doing the work should be carried out on Monday, so that as many men as possible could be started on Tuesday after authorisation being granted at the council meeting on Monday evening.
