SURPRISE PARTY. Last Saturday a surprise party oi friends of Miss Dorothy Harrison visited the home of her parents, 18, Studholme Street, Sprevdon, where a very enjoyable evening was spent in games, competitions and dancing. Among those present were Misses T. Wyman (Heathcote), E. Porteous (Lyttelton), G. Carson (Lyttelton), I. Martin, B. Newman, M. Roach. M. Knight, M. Fisher. V. Worm aid, Messrs S. Wyman, J. Wood, W. M’Laren (Heathcote), J. Huston (Lyttelton), W. Greig. C. Brown. G. Orchard, K. Frazer and I. Merrett. JOTTINGS. The Sprevdon Burgesses’ Association’s efforts to establish a library in Sprevdon will be. rewarded this year, as it has been advised on good authority that a sum of money is on the estimates for the purpose. The association has also received a letter from the Tramway Board stating that it has decided to replace the line on Lincoln Road from St Leonards Street to Hoon Hay Road in concrete and bitumen. The work will be commenced in October next, subject to the City Council putting the rest of the road in order. The board will write to the City Council expressing the hope that it will be able to do'its portion of the road about the same time. ST NICHOLAS CHURCH. St Nicholas churchpeople hold fortnightly social gatherings in the new schoolroom. On Wednesday they entertained about twentv-five people from St Phillip’s Church. Beckenham, and the evening was spent ip a progressive euchre match, the home team winning with 383 points against 335. After supper the ’ remainder of the evening was spent in dancing. - Mrs Ruud has been in charge of the musical programmes at these functions. Mr A. Truman has -been appointed the local representative on the parent vestry at Sydenham, and Mr S. Robinson is the local church secretary. A strong committee of ladies are at work preparing for a spring sale of work. They have just purchased a Singer sewing machine, and the Mite Society has bought a piano for the school. Improvements are being effected in the church grounds, shrubs, lilies and narcissi having been planted. The lady members of the committee are Mesdames Tiliotson. Stapp. Waters, E. J. Thompson. A. Thomson, Leonard. Baxter. Carrodus. Cotton, Truman, Giddens, M’Caldon and Roud. SPREVDON W.C.T.U. The monthly meeting of the Spreydon W.C.T.U. was held on Tuesday, and, considering the weather, there was an excellent attendance. After devotions, led by Mrs E. E. Smith, a paper entitled “ The Power of the Press," by Mrs Perryman, editor of The White Ribbon,” was read by Mrs Petrie. It was pointed out that every movement for social reform and spiritual uplift had used the Press as a valuable adjunct to the pulpit and platform. The freedom of a race was won by the power of the Press, and the freedom of a sex Was won by its aid. In the W.C.T.U. dominion “ The White Ribbon ” had its birth in the struggle for women’s franchise. A paper on the life of Francis Willard, founder of the W.C.T.U., was read by Mrs Nairn. Both papers were listened to with interest and wei-e much appreciated. Motions of sympathy to Mrs E. Burley in her continued ill-health and Mrs M’Farlane and family in their recent bereavement were One new member was initiated. The bring and buy table realised 34s to help the various funds.

ST MARY’S YOUNG MEN’S GUILD. There was a very large/assemblage of church workers at the guild social. Humorous competitions were won by Mesdames Downing and Line and Miss M. Neate, Messrs J. Wormald, H. Horner and W. Whithair. Musical and other items were contributed by the guild male voice choir; Mr and Mrs Line, piano and violin; Mr H. Horner, saxophone: Mr Browne, ventriloquist; Miss Ruth Griffiths, musical monologue ; and Messrs B. King and R. Neate, humorous sketch. During the evening a pre-

sentation was made to Mr Cliff Gyde, the guild secretary. U.A.O.D. The Perseverance Lodge met last Monday. The A.D. Brother F. Smith presided. The D.P., Brother L. Champ, was in attendance The auditors, PA. Brother T. Collins and P.A. Brother L. Rambin, congratulated the lodge on the excellent progress made numerically and financially during the past half year. Brothers Jones and Frisnel reported attending the Oak of Sydenham. The social committee reported that the first dance would take place in t.he Selwyn Street Flail on June 2S. The lodge adjourned for harmony and during the evening the D.P., Brother Champ, in presenting P.A. Brother E. J. A. Neil with a handsome framed diploma, spoke very highly of the services rendered to his lodge by Brother Neil. P.D.P. Brother Ealhani, of the Oak of Sydenham, also congratulated Brother Neil on the progress he had made during his term of office as D P. One new member was initiated. ADDINGTON BURGESSES* ASSOCIATION. A meeting of the Addington Burgesses’ Association was held on Monday evening, a lengthy discussion taking place with, respect to Jerrold Squarfe, which the association regards as a disgrace to the district. The City Council, it was mentioned, had been written to on several occasions in reference to this matter, but the only replies received were to the effect that the matter would be attended to. The association decided to continue its agitation until something definite is done. Ihe social committee's report was read, and it was.decided that a social to members and friends be held in the Selwyn Street Hall on Thursday, July 19. SOCIAL EVENING. An enjoyable evening was held-at 32, South Crescent Road by Mr Bert Forsyth in aid of the copper trail for church funds. Various games were indulged in, and items were contributed by:—Miss Valerie Forsyth, Misses Pollard and Brown, Messrs W. and A. Gray, B. Forsyth and N. James. The evening was brought to a close by tne singing of “ Auld Lang Syne.” BAPTIST CHURCH. Miss Edith Mayfield, of the Auckland Salvation Army, who is so well known in Sprevdon, is now on leave irom her charge at Grey Lynn. She vvrll be the soloist at the local Baptist Churcn on Sunday morning next. A successful concert \\ as held in the Sunday school -last Thursiclnv, when, in spite of the wet night, there was a large attendance. Items were contributed by the M’Millan family, Misses S. Rawstron, P. Marshall, Burgess and N. Haldane. Masters John and Horace Hamilton and Leslie Il&idane and boys chorus.
