In order to ide a greater depth • of water in the harbour of Montreal, i it. has been decided to construct seven submerged weirs between the Island of Montreal and Sorel. The work will be begun concurrently with the opening of navigation on the St Lawrence River, , at an estimated cost of approximately 1,500,000 dollars. It la estimated that construction of the submerged weirs , will take about two years, after which an additional two feet of water will be available in the harbour of Montreal, and a minimum of 30ft of water at all periods of the year will be obtained. The ultimate object, it is stated, is to provide 35ft of water in the port, and the construction work will be undertaken with this in view. The remedial works are expected to overcome the decreasing: water levels of the St Lawrence River at Montreal, which have been the subject of considerable comment in recent years, and which have been attributed by some authorities to the diversion of water from Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River through the Chicago Drainage Canal.
