MASTER MARINER, CAPTAIN J. H. SMITH, DIES IN CHRISTCHURCH.
The late Captain James Henry Smith, whose death occurred on Thursday, at the age of seventy-eight, was a very well-known figure in New Zealand shipping circles in bygone years. Captain Smith was born in London in 1851 and went to sea at an early age. He made trips to different African ports and came to New Zealand in his twentieth year, in 1871, as the mate of a sailing ship. He was for some time with the Northern Steam Ship Company, of Auckland, and later with the J. J. Craig line, which operated ships between New Zealand and Melbourne and Sydney. Until about twenty years ago when he entered business in Christchurch, Captain Smith was all his life actively connected with the sea, having command of many ships in his time. He took no part in public affairs. Captain Smith was a frequent contributor to the “ Star,” his articles dealing with the early shipping life of the country, and particularly Lyttelton.
