“THE DOVE” HAS CONTINUED SEASON AT GRAND THEATRE.
Norma Talmadge’s picture, "The Dove,” will continue at the Grand Theatre next week. A romantic story of South American people, " The Dove ” has a plot of some power, a story that is always moving, and a variety of characters that are true to the types they represent. The censor recommends It to adult audiences rather than juvenile ones. Miss Talmadge is seen as Dolores, the Dove, a dancer and singer in a cafe that is always seething with those toy soldiers and little revolutionaries, of the sort that flourish in those romantic parts. And Noah Beery is the villain who covets the Dove, and brooks no interference in his fell plans. But a brave Yankee from the north, most excellently played by Gilbert Roland, is at enmity with this villainous Don Jose, and, as events proved, it was an unwise thing to arouse that gentleman’s anger. For Don Jose owned, or said he owned, everything in Costa Rona, and we have the dramatic spectacle of the Yankee facing a firing squad. From the foregoing it is apparent that “ The Dove ” is a conventional, interesting play, with plenty of incident, some exquisite backgrounds and men and women of flesh and blood. It may almost be described as a seriocomedy drama, for there is much humour in some of the situations, and some of the titles are very dry. Norma Talmadge still retains her position as the premiere dramatic actress of the screen, and she was never seen to greater advantage than as Dolores. Gilbert Roland gives a restrained performance as the young American, and Noah Beery is heavy and realistic as Don Jose. The Grand Orchestra plays an appropriate programme of music. The box plans are at The Bristol Piano Company, where seats may be reserved.
