Mrs H. J. Raphael has returned to Christchurch from a visit to Auckland and Wellington. Mr and Mrs C. Brown have left for the North Island, where they will spend a holiday at Rotorua and Auckland. Mrs Frances Williams left Wellington yesterday for her home near Melbourne after spending a month’s holiday with Mrs C. H. I Tamil ton, Sumner. Mr and Mrs E. J. Vavasour, who have been in Christchurch for several days, returned to their home in Blenheim to-da\*. A very pleasant function was held at the establishment of R. Hannah and Co., High Street, to say farewell to Miss E. O'Carroll and Miss G. Ansell, on the occasion of their departure. The staff expressed their esteem by presenting them with a bather’s suit-case and leather hat-bag respectively. A surprise party visited the home of Mr and Mrs E. Kinsman, Richmond Terrace. The evening was spent in games, musical items and dancing. Among those present were: Mr and Mrs G. Brookes, Mr and Mrs R. Robinson. Mrs Flood, Mr J. Chegwin, Mr and Mrs H. Kinsman, Mr and Mrs W. Adams, Miss Dorris Heward and Miss King. Music was supplied by G. Brookes, J. Chegwin and L. Kinsman. An enthusiastic meeting was held in connection with St George’s Hospital at Mrs G. Todhunter’s house in Office Road yesterday afternoon. Canon Wilford spoke of the splendid work of the hospital since its opening day, and outlined an ambitious programme of work for the coming years. He said he felt sure that future legacies would help much in the development of St George’s. Congratulations were received by the meeting from Australia. All present joined the Society of the Friends of St George. A delightful bridge party was given by Mrs Douglas Russell on Thursday night in honour of Miss Doris Russell, who is to be married shortly. Beautiful bronze chrysanthemums were used to decorate the rooms and table. Amongst the guests were: Miss Doris Russell, Mrs Owen Baker, Mrs Gregory Russell, Mrs F. Sargent, Mrs G. llolford, Mrs T. Milliken, Miss Park, Miss Gladys Russell, Miss Jane Donnelly, Miss Agnes Richardson, Miss E. England, Miss Vida Baxter, Miss Kathleen Lascelles, Miss Mavis Saunders and Miss Sylvia Goss. A very old and respected resident of Papanui, Mrs H. Delahunt, passed awaj r after a short illness at Lewisham Hospital on Monday last. The deceased lady had resided in Papanui for over forty years, and although she was of a retiring nature she always took a keen interest in church affairs. Her husband predeceased her thirty-three years ago. She leaves four daughters, Mrs E. Bradley (Ashburton), Mrs R. Kidd (Wellington), and Mrs C. Goodall and Mrs W. Joyce (Christchurch), The funeral, which took place on Wednesday, was largely attended. At a meeting of the committee of the Selwyn Kindergarten, the members present were—Mesdames Hamlin (in the chair), Atkinson, Hutchings, Moyle, Harding and Robinson. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Osborne, Parlane, Griffiths and Patterson. The committee - assed a resolution of regret at Mrs Osborne’s severe illness, and expressed pleasure at Mrs Griffiths’s convalescence. The secretary reported a reply from the Minister of Education regarding a suitable site for a school. The matter was left in the hands of the member for the district. The jumble sale resulted in a profit of £B.

An enjoyable bridge and five hundred tournament was held at “ The Lodge,” Hereford Street, on Wednesday last. Those taking part were: Dr and Mrs Jennings, Mr and Mrs R. Sellars, Mr and Mrs Doolan, Mr and Mrs Dawson, Mrs Sime, Mrs Harding, Misses Wilson, Brett, Mercer, Candy, Reese and Mayne, and Mesdames Anderson, Jacks, Prankerd, Smerdon, Moore and Bush. Others present were: Mrs Gunn, Dr and Mrs <'hilton, the Rev Mr and Mrs Gibb, Mrs Alcock and Miss Shanahan. At the end of the evening the prizes were presented by Mrs Jennings, the winners being Mrs W. Dawson and Mr A. Anderson.

On Saturday evening a surprise party visited the home of Mr and Mrs M Clean, Waltham, where a very pleasant evening was spent in games, competitions and dancing. Several items were given by Mr Vincent de la Hunt’s orchestra. Those present were: Mr and Mrs Reynolds. Mr and Mrs Faulkner, Mr and Mrs M’Clean, Mr and Mrs Smith, Mesdames R. Hodgson, Rossiter, A. Sewell, J. Kerron, Misses L. Kinney, Annie Kinney, Myrtle Vincent, J. Cunningham. Jessie Vincent, Mae Ellis, Gladys Ellis, B. Hartley, L. Withers, Mae Tinnelly, Edna Perron, Esme Smith, Lois M’Clean. Messrs Arthur Hodgson, Earnie Ambrose. Vincent, de la Hunt. Keith Roberts. Gordon Bennett, Norman Rossiter, Robert Grant. Thomas Minnotti, Raymond M’Causland, William Cunningham, Raymond Rossiter, Leslie Wiles. Earnest Wrighft, Douglas M’Donald, W. Heslip, and Charles Tinnelly. A most enjoyable evening in the form of a surprise party was spent recently at the residence of Mr and Mrs A. Beveridge, Shakespeare Road. Waltham, in honour of the Basketball Queen, Miss Edna Small. The evening was indulged in games, songs, music and dancing, and was brought to a close by the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” Among the many present were:—Mr and Mrs A. Beveridge, Misses Edna Small, Rona Beveridge, Gladys Hurrell, Lona Palmer. Nell Brown. Gladys Gear, Zelma Palmer, May Welbeloved, Eleen Lavery, Gracie Taylor, Dolly Wayne, Vera Ditchings, Maisie Fass, Mira Clark, Dorothy Ditchings. Messrs Leo Corbett, Vic Tiney, Roland Beveridge, Clarie Symons, Fred Turpin, Colin Willae, Trevor Beveridge, Oscar Edwards, Eric Smith, Ken Whitlow, George Edwards, Mac Walshaw, Searle, Simpson, Will Brooker. Walter Smith, Reg Hauler, Tom Dickson, Charles Ryatt, and L. Williams.

A number of young peo.ple enjoyed a most delightful dance at the residence of Mrs C. E. Page, Cashmere, on Wednesday evening. Dancing took place in the spacious drawing-room, and a dainty supper was served in the dining-room. which was tastefully adorned with autumn foliage. Mr and Mrs J. Stowell have returned to Timaru from Christchurch. Mr and Mrs A. J. M'Masters returned to Pigeon Bay after a short stay in Christchurch. Mr and Mrs H. G. Black, Ranfurly, who were in Christchurch on a brief visit, returned to their home to-day. Mr and Mrs J. B. M’Callum have returned to Blenheim after a brief stay in Christchurch. Mrs T. Herrick, Hawke's Bay, and Mr and Mrs A. R. Menzies, of Wellington, arrived in Christchurch from the north this morning and are staying at the United Service Hotel.
