OTHER SHOPS SELLING SMOKING REQUISITES MUST OBSERVE TIMES.

The Gazette notice fixing the closing hours of tobacconists’ shops in Christchurch has now been received by the Labour Department. It will come into force immediately. The notice provides that on and after May 21. 1928. all tobacconists’ shops within the combined district of Christchurch, shall be closed in the evening of working days as follows:—Subject to closing at not later than 1 p.m. on the day of the statutory half-hot?dav. on Mondays, Tuesdays. Wednesdays. Thursdays, and Saturdays at 6 p.m., and on Fridays at 10 pin , with the following exceptions:— (1) During Carnival Week, on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at 8 p.m., on Thursday at 10 p.m., and on Saturday at 9 p.m. (2) During Grand National Week, on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at S p.m.. on Friday at 10 p.m.. and on Saturday at 6 p.m. (3) On Christmas Eve and on New Year’s Eve. at 12 midnight. <4) In the event of Christmas Day falling on a Sunday or a Mondav, the following hours of closing shall observed during the week preceding Ghristmas Day: Monday, Tuesday. Wednesday at 6 p.m., Friday at 12 midnight, and Saturday at 11 p.m. (5) Where a special holiday occurs nn a Friday and the shops are closed for the whole of the day, the hour of closing on the preceding Thursday shall be 10 p.m. The notice dated October 3t. 1916. and published in the New Zealand Gazette, fixing the closing hours of hairdressers’, tobacconists’, and hairdressers and tobacconists’ shops in Christchurch, is cancelled so far as it relates to the shops affected by this notice. All other shops within the combined district in which smoking requisites are sold shall be closed at the lame hours as are set out for tobacconists’ shops, provided that no such other •hop which is closed for the statutory half-holiday on any day other than Saturday shall be required by the Act, to be dosed earlier than 9 p.m. on Saturday. It is understood that tobacconists have supplied the Labour Department with a list of all other shops in Christchurch selling smoking requisites. Under the Act, an inspector will have the right to search premises.
