LATE PERSONALS.

• Mr Sydney Francis Hoben, who has been spending a holidav in the North Island, returned to Christchurch this morning. Mr John Cook, formerly of the staff of the Bank of New Zealand, whose death has ocurred at Takapuna was a native of Aberdeen, his father, Mr John Cook, being the owner of one of the shipping lines engaged in trade with the South Pacific Colonies fifty years ago. Mr Cook received his training as a banker in the Chartered Mercantile Bank, in London. He arrived in Auckland in 1879 and entered the service of the Bank of New Zealand, which then had its head office in Auckland. Afterwards he served the bank in various parts of New Zealand, eventually becoming manager of the Ashburton branch, where he was stationed for fourteen years. Later he was relieving manager. In 1919 he retired and since then had lived at Takapuna. Mr Cook was a keen supporter of acclimatisation work. He took an active in terest in the Auckland branch of the Navy League, being honorary secretary for some time. He is survived by two sons and one daughter, Mr W. A. Cook, who is now in Leicestershire, Mr W. D. Cook, farmer of Ngatapa, Poverty Bay, and Mrs C. G. J. Wily, of Milford. Mr B. C. Aston, F.1.C., F.C.S., F.N.Z.1., has been appointed president of the New Zealand Institute in succession to the late Dr Alan Thomson.
