Senior Grade Matches. Most of the senior teams showed a slight increase in their match totals last week. In the Sydenham v. Sumner match the latter put up the best score so far this season, namely 543. There were only four possibles in last week's senior grade matches, but the average scoring was slightly better than in the previous week. All the matches were very keenly contested, two l*eing won by the narrow margin of one point. Sydenham met Sumner on their home range, and suffered defeat for the first time this season by* 543 to 542. It was a most exciting contest, and the result was in doubt until the following flay, when the two targets sent in by the Sydenham checker were judged. These were given nines, and Sumner won by one point. The shooting was ■very good on both sides, there being ■five scores of 69 and three of 68. Honours of the match went to J Edmonds, of Sumner, who put on a possible, and other good scores for the winners were Harry Reynolds 69, W. Wells 69, and C. Timbrel! 69. For Sydenham A. Barker 69. S. O. Hay 69, S. Nelson 68, D. Low 68. and C. Jessop 68 were shooting up to top form. < ashmere A team journeyed to New Brighton and defeated the local side by two points. The match was very exciting. as "Cashmere just won with a possible for the last man down. For any team to lose the use of both rifles in a match is most disastrous, but this really happened to Cashmere. Neither gun was shooting too well the previous week, but last week's matches placed the position beyond doubt. Fortunately the first two members down found out that the rifles were not right, and private rifles were brought into use, with good results, two possibles and two 68’s being notched. Brighton shot well and perhaps were unlucky in not securing a win. For Cashmere, A. Martin 70. 11. Haworth 70, D. Barr 68 and D. M Donald 68 were top scorers, while W. Hobbs 68, D. Turner 68. A. Beaven 67, Y. Tims 67 and G. Catton 67 were in a like position for Brighton. The Christchurch Working Men’s Club visited Cashmere and were successful in defeating the local B team by one point after getting the derision at the hands of the association checkers. The Cashmere team opened very moderately with scores of 65 and 66, while the visitors put on-68 and two 66's,\ and followed this up with a possible by G. Crimp and a 68 by their captain. 11. Biggins. The next two for The Hills side, F. Judkins and S. H. Clarke, evened up the totals somewhat with 68 and 69 respectively, and later 11. Firman notched 68. With the exception of those already mentioned, the rest on both sides* shot just fairly. Scores of 07 each mom the last two men down for Cashmere would have won the match. :: JUNIOR NOTES. Kaiapoi Woollen are,to be congratulated on their excellent shoot last week, showing an improvement of just on two points per man. The writer has it that the result was largely due to new ammunition, and it is hoped that further good scores will be recorded. It was a surprise victory, as W. H. Harris. Ltd., had been shooting very well during the last two weeks, and were fully expected to win, but they could only notch 529 to the winners’ 535. For Kaiapoi Woollen J. Pa ton 69, F. Burgoyne 69, W. Marriott 68 and E. Grange 67, and for Harris, Ltd., C. M’Callum "68, N. Harris 68, S. Stephens 68 and L. Harris 67 were top scorers. Ileathcote showed a slight improvement on their opening match total, putting on 522. Their opponents, Sydenham, shot very badly, only registering 497, as against 535 the previous week. For the winners, L. Gamblin 69, R. Poulson 69 and W. Read 67 shot very well. For Sydenham, T. Craig put on a possible, while R. Harrison shot 67. Returned Soldiers won a very close ffllatrh against Cashmere by one point. Cashmere had difficulty with a rifle, with new rifles this week an improvement can be looked for. The winners shot very much below their total of 542 the previous week in notching 532. C. Farley 69, R. Stringer 38 and 11. Gracie 67 were top scorers last week For Cashmere, L. Carlyle, who u shooting exceptionally well just now,

put on a possible, -while F. Haworth anrl W. Guy, 6S each, were also in form. tl 3 »•* Burwood notched 52S against the Christchurch Working Men’s Club. It was a fair total in which E. Emmett 69, J. Partridge 68 and V. Major 67 were prominent. The losers shot just moderately for 521, the best shoots being F. Matthews 68, R. Warman 68 and J. Grey 67. PRESIDENT S CUP. Returned Soldiers are still going well and topped the totals in the President’s Cup grade last week with 533, this being better than seven of the junior totals. E. Peach 70, P. Riches 67 and R. Shaw 67 were mainly responsible. Their opponents, the Brighton Ladies, with 517, shot about their average scores. Top scores were 66 put on by Mrs Ball and Mrs Moses. :: Lyttelton, who are now leading in the President’s Cup, shot somewhat below their previous totals in scoring 519 against Burwood’s 506. D. M’Cormick 68 and A. Burberry, sen., 67 were quite the best for the winners. The only promising score for Burwood was a 67 by J. Richards. In defeating the Ward’s Ladies team by 521 to 508, Railway shot up to previous form. L. O’Connor’s 69 was a good shoot for the winners. Ward’s Ladies ard not shooting the scores they were last year, but should improve by the end of the first round. In last week’s match the best scores were a 67 by Mrs Harper and a 66 by Mrs A■ B. L. Smith. :: Cashmere made amends for their poor display against Railway the previous week by putting on 528 against Marists Old Boys, who registered 492. Cashmere will be again hard to defeat for the President’s Cup, as they are showing improved form. Marists Old Boys have steadily improved on their opening scores, and should be shooting better next round. R. Harley 68 and J. M'Carthy 67 were two good scorers for Marists. MID-CANTERBURY CHAMPIONSHIPS. The Ashburton Miniature Rifle Assocition is to be congratulated on the excellent programme for the annual championship meeting. The total prizemoney is £lO5. This year the executive has made a new departure by putting on two extra matches and a teams shoot. There are three matches carrying prizes to the value of £ls each, and a grand aggregate of £25. The match for the magnificent teams shield carries a total of £26. Three special trophies complete the programme. The meeting takes place on Saturday. June 2, and Monday, June 4. It is hoped that most of the country teams will shoot on the opening day, so as to leave a clear day on the Monday for the visiting competitors from South and North Canterbury. The prize list is quite the best to date and the meeting should be accorded liberal patronage by miniature riflemen. 3 CLUB NOTES. Cashmere fired their seventh hotty competition last evening, the result being a tie between D. ’ M’Donald, W. Gabb and L. Ragg with 69 each. In the shoot-off M’Donald and Ragg tied again with 69 each. In the monthly sweepstakes competition W. Gabb and L Ragg tied and divided first and second prizes. G. third.
