NOTES BY SPECIAL CONTRIBUTORS.
UNEVEN HEMLINE IS EXPRESSED IN TIERS. One of the most effective—and also one of the most practical xvays of introducing width in the nexv skirts is the use of tiers and ruffles. Thxis the much desired uneven hemline can be suggested without having the skirt actually very irregular. These tiers are circular, gathered or pleated, and are used singly or in groups of two or three. They give an upward movement that is very smart. Detail is often achiex-ed in the new dresses by means of fagoting. At luncheon one sees many chic fashionables wearing new fagoted frocks. THAT PETROL SMELL, Your beaded georgette frock should clean very well in petrol. Aviation petrol is quite the best kind to use for cleaning purposes. You can obtain this from most garages. Squeeze the frock gently in a basin of petrol, then rinse in fresh petrol. Hang the dress out of doors until the smell disappears. Instead of removing the smell of petrol from the clothes. after cleaning them, it would be better to purify the petrol itself before it is used. This can be done by straining it through chamois leather. Other helps are to use aviation petrol and to dry the clothes xvell before cleaning them. Professional dyers and cleaners air dry-cleaned garments in well-ventilated rooms. Petrol, of course, should be handled with great care, as it is most inflammable. TARNISHED SILVER BROCADE. Did You Know— That tarnished silver brocade can often be restored with French chalk and methylated spirits, mixed to a paste, which is rubbed in hnd left to dry? Brush carefully after this, x*: If it is badly tarnished, a good remedy is to touch the metal with a weak, warm solution of cyanide of potassium, sponging it off afterwards with xvater and then drying the brocade. As cj r anide is a deadly poison, it should be dabbed on with a piece of cotton-wool tied on to a stick, instead of being touched xvith the fingers.
