“MUCH POVERTY AT PRESENT IN CITY.”
CROWD OF CHILDREN COME DAILY FOR SOUP, SAYS NURSE MAUDE.
Nurse Maude, in her annual report to the Nurse Maude Association for District Nursing, states: “ Much poverty has come under our notice, which we have been able to relieve with clothing and food. A small army of children come daily with their cans for soup, etc., which is supplied by the New Zealand Farmers’ Co-opera-tive Association, and Mr Coffey, proprietor of the King George Hotel, to whom we arc grateful. “It is difficult to cope with the demand for clothing and boots, especially for children. “ Our cupboards are getting bare, and with the winter coming, we would be most grateful to subscribers if they would remember us.” Nurse Maude adds: —“There is not a great deal to report this year; the work goes on much as usual. We have our old people with us, and a large proportion of our work is among those suffering from cancer, which is so distressing, as we can do little to relieve them. Then there are many who come to us with ulcerated legs, some coming in from the country for treatment. This forms a great part of our out-patient work in the office.” The health of the nurSes. Nurse Maude states, is good, and the work runs smoothly. The number of visits paid for the year ending March 31, 1928, was 14,839, of which 2532 were cases attended to at the office. There have also been 6935 miscellaneous calls. The balance-sheet for the year ended March 31 last shows a credit balance of £74 18s 3d, but this is due to the fact that there were bequests amounting to £352 3s 2d. The amount brought forward at the beginning of the year, £392 15s sd, was from bequests in the previous year, and the expenditure has exceeded ordinary donations by £270. The amount of £4OO, held over last year, has been invested in Auckland Harbour Board debentures and added to the endowment fund. Subscriptions and donations for the year show an increase of £6O, and patients’ donations show a decrease of £7O.
