BRIGADE PREVENTS SERIOUS FIRE IN FURNITURE FACTORY.

By arriving very promptly on the premises of Messrs T. Cocks and Sons, Salisbury Street, near the corner of Victoria Street, about 6 p.m. yesterday, the Fire Brigade, under DeputySuperintendent Blake,,prevented a serious fire. The premises are used as cabinetmaking works. The outbreak was in the workshop on the first floor, where there is a great deal of shavings, sawdust, and light woodwork, including valuable pieces of furniture. The fire seems to have started in a corner on a shelf on which there were picture frames, but. there was nothing to show how it began. The first alarm was given by a woman who was passing. The brigade j arrived before the fire had a good i start, but one of the walls of the office was badly charred, and the flames ( blackened the ceiling. The brigade made an entry through a window, from a lean-to. It had m> difficulty in getting the fire in hand, but if it had been only a few minutes later it would have had a troublesome task. Mrs M. Cocks, proprietress of the establishment, and her employees were in the workshop until about 5.45 p.m., when everything seemed to be quite all right. Mrs Cocks hardly had reached her home when she received a telephone message that a fire had broken The damage by fire was slight, and no damage was done by water. Some inconvenience will be caused in the workshop on account of the delay caused in fulfilling orders in hand. The building is a two-storev brick one, with an iron roof.
