200 BELIEVED DEAD IN MINE EXPLOSION.

AWFUL DISASTER AT AMERICAN PIT. (United Press Assn.—By Electrie Telegraph.—Copyright.) NEW YORK, May 20. A coal mine explosion at Mather, Pennsylvania, entombed 182 men. Thirty bodies have been removed and thirty located. Thirteen men were rescued alive. Five of the thirteen men who were rescued are in hospital and are not expected to live. Experts lielieve that none of those entrapped in the mine will be found alive, but all possible help in rescue work has been extended by the Red Cross and other organisations and by the miners. The explosion took place as the day and night men were shifting places, and caught part of each group Workers believe that many bodies are now hidden in the debris. Gas and damp hamper the rescue crews, who fear that there are 200 dead. —Australian Press Association.
