In response to a further request from the Australasian Council of Trades Unions for a conference to discuss the sea cooks’ strike, the owners replied granting the request, but stating that they have already announced the terms on which a settlement is possible—the abandonment of job control and of the roster system. There can be no compromise on this matter, they say, as the terms embody a vital principle, but, if knowing this, the council still wishes to meet the owners in conference, the latter, as a matter of courtesj', will not refuse.— Australian Press Association. At the conclusion of the marine cooks’ meeting Mr Tudehope, general secretary, announced that the meeting had unanimously reaffirmed the attitude of the union that it would not tolerate the Australasian Council o * Trades Unions’ interference in the dis pute without the consent of the union. The strike position thus is unchanged At Melbourne a conference between the executive of the Australasian Council of Trades Unions, representatives of the marine unions and the shipowners has commenced, but so far has not reached a basis for a settlement of the dispute.—Australian Press Association.
