French patriots have knocked the right leg off the statue of the prophet Daniel, one of the most striking sculptures on the facade of the cathedral at Metz. The explanation is that in the course of the German occupation, after 1870. the German architect who had charge of the rebuilding erected a statue of the prophet but gave it the features of the ex-Kaiser. It is impossible to remove the statue without gravely damaging the cathedral. so the French • residents have mutilated it b\' knocking the right leg to pieces.
