Mrs J. Guthrie, Holly Road, has returned to Christchurch from Otira. Miss Fay Ballin will leave this evening for the north, en route to Hamilton and Auckland. Miss M. O. Stoddart (Cashmere Hills) has returned from Wellington, where she spent a short holiday. Mrs Vincent Ward (Heretaunga), who has been visiting her mother, Mrs R. G. Petre, leaves for the north tonight. Mrs J. Joseph and her daughter (Kipling Street), have returned from a holiday spent in the North Island. Mrs Jeffrey Tregonning, of Wellington, is visiting her mother, Mrs E. Edmonds, Montreal Street, west. Mr and Mrs W. Taylor (Dunedin) and Miss D. Mason (Timaru) are staying at Warner's Hotel. Mrs Elliston Orbell (Dunedin) is visiting her sisters, the Misses Tabart, Papanui Road. Mr and Mrs T. K. R. Whitehouse have been spending a few days in Christchurch, and have now returned to their home, North Street, Timaru.
Mr and Mrs F. Robinson, of East Belt. Rangiora, are visiting m the North Island, and are guests at t.ie liotei Cecil, Wellington. Mrs H. Bleasdale and her daughter (St Asaph Street), have returned from the North Island where Mrs Bleasdale has been the guest of her brother, Mr Angas Johnston. The engagement is announced of Lewis Allison, only son of the late George Morison, of Dunedin, and Mrs Morison, Christchurch, to Mollie, youngest daughter of the Hon Mr Justice Herdman, and the late Mrs Herdman, and widow of the late J. T. Knight. Latest arrivals at the Hotel Federal include: —Mr E. C. Cooper (Wellington), Mr J. FI. Bretherton (Wanganui), Mrs and Miss Lattimore (Timaru), Mr J. FI. Cooper (Nelson), Miss B. M’lntyre (Dunedin); Mr B. V. Pemberton (Wellington), Miss Mildred Goldie (Totara Valley), Miss D. C. Hunt (Nelson), Mr and Mrs A. L. Taylor (Christchurch), Mr S. W. Moscrip (Gisborne), Mr J. Boniface (Palmerston North), Mr W. A. D. Cox (Chatham Islands), Mr R. S. Paterson (WTellington). A delightful surprise evening was given on Friday evening at the home of Mrs J. N. MTntosh, Salisbury Street, in' honour of Miss Merle Drake, whose marriage will take place early next pionth. Competitions, games and music were the order of the evening at the close of which a delicious supper was served. As a memento of the occasion each guest presented Miss Drake with a gift for her future home. Those present were:—Mesdames MTntosh, Green, Ward, Railton, Milton. J. Bryce, Thompson, Young, M. Prendergast, E. Bosworth, J. Hollander and Diamond, Misses Sims and P. Hollander. A pleasant dance -was given by Mrs W. B. Cunningham, “Westburn,” to her niece, Miss Jean Pierson and her friends recently. The dance room was daintily decorated with pink and gold streamers, and music was supplied by Miss Dorothy Moore. The Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss Moyna and partner. Amongst those present were: Mrs W r . B.
