SMITH AND HOOVER LEAD IN OREGON.

(United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) NEW YORK, May 19. A message from Portland says that Governor A 1 Smith had a substantial lead over his opponents in the%rst returns from the Oregon Democratic primary election. It is predicted that he will gain the support of Oregon’s ten Democratic delegates at the National Convention. Mr Smith had a two to one majority over Senator Walsh, the size of the latter’s vote being a surprise, owing to his previous announcement of withdrawal. Senator Reed was third, and the Rev Alonzo Workman, of Missouri. fourth, with a scattered vote. Mr H. C. Hoover, Secretary of State, was unopposed for thirteen delegates on the Republican side.—Australian Press Association.
