FIFTH ROUND OF MATCHES PLAYED.

Hockey was played to-day on fast grounds and in good weather The three senior game were played at Hagley Park, and the winners gave some good displays. Results were.— Selwyn 9, Trinity k ’ Technical B 2, Varsity 0. Sydenham 10. St Albans 1. Technical A a bye. x POSITION or THE TEAMS. With five rounds completed the competition table shows an interesting position, and the race for the championship should be close and interesting. The following table shows how the teams stand:—

SELWYN v. TRINITY. With their attacking machine in firstclass order, Selwyn made the pace willing from the start. S. Bell scored a beauty from a penalty corner in the first two minutes. J. Squire added another with a good shot, and then W. Richmond accounted for a third. B. Morris notched a fourth goal for Selwyn from a rebound, and the same player and S. Bell added further goals before half-time came with the scores: Selwj-n 6. Trinity 0. Trinity improved in the second spell and had a share in the attack. R. Collins scored with a good one from a free-hit. Selwyn retaliated, and 11. Ilore went through to score with a neat shot. S. Bell was on the job again and scored a before time. Final score:— SELWYN 9 TRINITY 1 Referee, Mr R. Grade. VARSITY V. TECHNICAL B. Technical attacked on the left wing, a shot from Bastion being saved by Mackie at the expense of a corner. Ar run by Ford transferred play to the other end, where Holland had an unsuccessful shot. Technical’s forwards broke away for Scott to centre to Cockroft, who missed with a high shot. Technical kept up the pressure, J. Hill putting behind. Then a shot from Bastion was well saved, and a long hit by Loney returned play. Technical attacked, but Hahn’s shot missed, and then a good opportunity was lost through carrying in the circle. Ford put in a fast run for Varsity, but held on too long before centring. Varsity gained a couple of corners, but both proved abortive. Wear put Technical on the attack, but off-side play nullified the effort. Two good chances were missed by Technical through breaches in the circle. Half-time came with the Technical B 0, Varsity 0.

On resuming Ford broke away for Varsity, the Technical custodian saving by conceding a corner. Play soon went to the other end. where Technical kept up a sustained attack. L. Davis, the Varsity right winger, was prominent with a good run. Technical kept up a solid pressure, several shots narrowly missing. A breakaway by Varsity saw Holland shoot behind. Bastion tricked the Varsity three-quarters, but he shot erratically. Technical's forwards initiated a passing rush, and Scott followed in to open the score. Varsity now livened up. hut Wear was playing a sound defensive game. Bastion broke through to notch Technical's second goal. Scott and Hahn both narrowly missed with shots for Technical. Time was called with the scores: TECHNICAL B 2 VARSITY 0 Referee: Mr W. H. Down. SYDENHAM V. ST. ALBANS. Not very many minutes had elapsed before Laugridge opened the score for Sydenham with an easy shot. Sydenham 1, St. Albans. 0. Sydenham again secured, and James put another in in quick time. Sydenham 2, St. Albans 0. From a penalty corner, Langridge secured and netted. Sydenham 3, St. Albans 0. Two more goals were scored in quick succession by Rushbridge and respectively. At half-time the score was:— Sydenham 5, St. Albans 0. Sydenham soon gained more ground and Lahdridge again netted. Sydenham 6, St Albans 0. Play was resumed, but Hale was injured. He was removed to the hospital. Play continued and St Albans gained a penalty corner, but nothing resulted from it. J. Hardy took up Hale’s position. James netted for Sydenham, making the scores: Sydenham 7, Ft Albans 0. Then Quartermain netted for ijt Albans, and two other scores for Sydenham brought the final scores to: SYDENHAM 10 ST ALBAN'S . l
