LEADING TEAMS MEET IN MATCH AT MONICA PARK. Sydenham and Marist, the two leading teams in the Canterburv Rugby League's senior grade competition, met at Monica Park this afternoon, when the second round was commenced. Addington and Waimairi played at St James's Park, Papanui, and Woolston met liornby at Ilornby. Points to the credit of teams before to-dav's matches were as follow: Sydenham 4, Marist 4, Waimairi 3, Addington 2, Hornby 2, Woolston 0. SYDENHAM V. MARIST. Fa 1 gar. Sydenham kicked off against the sun and the Marist backs were seen in action, but the movement was abortive. Burns and Carroll led a rush into their opponents’ twenty-five, but the Sydenham vanguard rallied well and play returned to midfield. A penalty gave Hamburger a shot at. goal but the hall fell just underneath. From a scrum Bond went, away down the line but he stepped into touch. Marist carried play into their opponents’ territory, but Clegg relieved with a long kick. Then from half-way the Sydenham pack dribbled through. Brittenden's clearing kick was a grubber, and Le Warne, following up fast, gathered in t||e ball and

crossed for a try. Heuchan failed to convert. Soon after Falgar made a spectacular run, but he was hauled down close to the line. Marist drove the attackers back to mid-field. Then Carroll got possession and after a fine run he transferred to Rich, who raced over in the corner. Bond failed with a good kick. Play livened up, Hvlth Marist attacking hotly. Bond made another fine dash down the line, but Fraser bumped him out near the corner flag. From play in the Sydenham twenty-five the Marist rearguard were seen in action and Brittenden dived over near the posts. Gillespie converted. The Marist backs handled nicely again, but a desperate def6nce kept them out. Sydenham were hard pressed and another Marist rush saw Rich cross wide out. The kick failed. Half-time

Marist 11, Sydenham 3. Both teams made the pace hot from the kick-off. From inside half-wav Fraser fielded the ball, and after a good run he transferred to Falgar. who In turn ]«)t the ball out to Hamburger, who grounded the leather In the corner. Heuchan’s kick failed. Marist took the offensive, and from a scrum in the twenfive Burns threw out a long pass to Brittenden, who transferred to Bond, the last-named scoring in the corner. His kick failed. Sydenham rallied, and Marist were called upon to defend solidly. Then in midfield Turton threw the ball out to Hamburger, who raced away down the line. Le Warne was in attendance, and, taking a pass, he outpaced the opposition in a zig-zag run to score under the posts. Heuchan failed with an easy kick. Sydenham pressed, and Le Warne cross-kicked with a grubber. Tonkin only had to pick up tile ball and run across for a try, but ho fumbled badly, and a certain try was lost. Marist returned to the attack, but a free kick to Sydenham relieved. Then Marist were, compelled to force. Sydenham made great efforts to score. The final seres were:—Marist 19. Sydenham 14. Referee, Mr J. J. Stevens. ADDINGTON V. WAIMAIRI. From the kick off, ’Waimairi tore down on to the Addington goal, - where Blazey had an unsuccessful kick at goal. Waimairi kept up the .pressure and Sneddon forced his way over. Blazey failed to convert. Waimairi 3. Addington 0. Addington took play to the other end. where a pretty passing bout ended in Stapley" scoring under, the posts. -j’Connell converted. Addington 5, Waimairi 3. The ball was thrown about by both sides in pretty passing rushes. Blazey figuring in a movement which, had Addington hard pressed. In a. collision at high speed, O’Connell was knocked clean out. but after a short spell he returned to the field. A few minutes later R. Mayne was injured, and retired. Barnard secured the ball in a melee near the corner, but he failed to ground the ball and a sure try was missed. At. half-time the score was:— * Addington 6, Waimairi 3. With the sun behind them in the second spell, Waimairi threw the ball about freelv, and O'Connor, Hartley and Lynskey figured in some lightning passing bouts. Finally Lennie broke right through in a great passing bout to score near the corner. Blazey failed with the kick. Waimairi 6, Addington ,V A minute later O’Connor sent Hart-

ley away in his own twenty-five. Hartley handed on to Smith, who ran from his own twenty-five to score a brilliant try. Spencer failed to convert.. Waimairi 9, Addington 5. The play was fast and open, Waimairi shining in rush after rush. The defence of O’Connell was the only thing that saved Addington. Smith again broke through in a great dribbling rush, and snapped up the ball to score near the corner. Waimairi 12, Addington 5. Further tries were added for Addington by Blazey, F. Lynskey, R. Lynskey, and C. Sisson. J. Kelly converted a try. The final score was: — WAIMAIRI 26 ADDINGTON 5 Mr H. King was referee. WOOLSTON V. HORNBY. Hornby did most of the attacking against Woolston. The game was hard, with a good deal of forward play. What back play there was was provided mainly by Hornby, whose backs combined fairly well. Cliff Woods was the outstanding player on the ground, while Wilkie and Peart (Hornby) and Murray and Newton (Woolston) were fairly sound. Tries in the first half were scored for Hornby by Cliff Woods, Mackie and Peart. Smith kicked one goal and Davis two. Murray scored for Woolston and Main converted. In the second half tries were scored for Hornby by Davis, Smith, Woods and Woodgate. Davis kicked two goals and Smith four. For Woolston Murray •2'). Main and A.
