LAND BOARD DENIES RESPONSIBILITY FOR RECENT COURT CASES.
At the recent criminal sessions of the Supreme Court in Christchurch, two returned soldier farmers were charged with breaches of the Chattels Transfer Act. In each case the jury returned a verdict of not guilty without retiring, and his Honor Mr Justice Adams expressed the opinion that responsible officers of the Crown should not take proceedings without sufficient reason and competent advice. The matter was considered by the Canterbury District Lands Board at its meeting this week. The board directed that all the particulars in connection with the cases should be placed before it. The board passed the following resolution:—“This board regrets that the published reports of two recent cases inferred that the blame for taking action is on the Lands Board or the Lands Department. This is not the case. It is trusted that similar prominence will be given to a denial, the board’s records being available to the Press to bear this out/’
