RESEARCH IN WHEAT TO BE DONE HERE
MASSEY COLLEGE WILL HAVE OTHER DUTIES. Professor 11. G. Denham, Canterbury College, who is a member of the Industrial and Scientific Research Council, stated to-day that he thought that a misapprehension had given rise to a complaint by Canterbury merchants and farmers interested in the Agricultural College at Lincoln, that the Government had decided to locate the cereal research station at the Massey College, Palmerston North. As far as wheat is concerned. Professor Denham said, the work will be done partly at Lincoln and parti}-’ in Christchurch. Dr F. W. Hilgendorf, a member of the college staff at Lincoln, had been engaged on researches for years, and would continue his work. The misapprehension arose, apparently, from the fact that it was necessary to do a great deal of the research work in other centres adapted for the dealing with other plants than wheat. lie did not think that there was any justification for the statement that the cereal work would be transferred to Palmerston North. He added that there had been some talk of the Government agricultural offices being centred at Palmerston North. That was a matter for the Government alone; it did not concern the Research Council. In any case, no definite announcement had been made.
