There were heavy showers overnight, but the morning broke fine and the weather was beautiful for the opening of the meeting. The track is in good order, having rolled out well- The attendance is well up to the average. There were seventeen runners in the opening event, Lady’s Boy and Callanniore being most sought after by backers Of the others, Fee Simple and Desert Lad carried most money. The Wai-kato-trained Lady’s Boy made a bold bid to carry his army of backe*rs through and, had his rider not made such a lot of use of him, he would have won. As it was, he raced up to the front with Eka, and after the latter retired, he failed to withstand a challenge by Desert Lad and went under by half a neck. Desert Lad was always well placed, and the astonishing thing was the price he returned, after costing his backers money at Egmorrt. Fee Simple, the other representative from G. New’s stable, ran a good race, although he drew 14 at the post. Both he and Callanmore, who drew 16, were prominent all the way, and are worth keeping in mind. King Mart covered a good deal of ground to finish fifth. Avro, nearly last at the turn, finished sixth with a great run. Bright Comet and Cold Air ran fair, races. The latter was last to leave the mark and was eighth at the post.

Alaric was the only defection from the Hack Steeplechase, and San Fera was made favourite, carrying abbut £3OO more than Mixed Heather, with Ruby Ring next in request. Radiate was an early leader, but at the end of a round the order was Mixed Heather, Radiate, Son o’ Mine, San Fera, Ruby Ring and Royal Heather, Vaninnia having baulked and Risk fallen. Radiate again took command along the back from Mixed Heather, Ruby Ring, Son o’ Mine and San Fera. Radiate led into the straight from Ruby Ring, Mixed Heather, Son o’ Mine and San Fera. Radiate appeared to have the race won, but fell at the last fqnce, and Mixed Heather ran to the front to win by twelve lengths from Ruby Ring, with Son o’ Mine three lengths away, Then came San Fera and Royal Heather.
