RANGIORA BOROUGH COUNCIL HAS MEETING.

The Borough Council met last night, those present being—The Mayor (Mr W. A. Rowse), and Councillors C. S. Ayers, R. H. Bailey, J. Catherwood, A. E. Evans, C. I. Jennings, J. F. Sutherland and C. W. Tyler. The Fire Brigade was granted the use of the Council Chamber for its annual meeting on May 21, and an invitation to the Mayor and councillors to be present was accepted. It was decided to meet representatives of the Kaiapoi Borough Council for the purpose of discussing electrical supply matters of mutual interest to the boroughs, as early as possible. The Canterbury Progress League forwarded the report of the committee on highways, consideration of which was held over until the next meeting. On the recommendation of -'the Finance Committee, it was decided to offer to supply the Northern Agricultural and Pastoral Association with sufficient trees to replace those destroyed by fire on the portion of the show grounds in the river bed, on the distinct understanding that the council recognised no liability in respect of the association’s claim for damages on the ground of the fire having spread from the borough rubbish dump. Accounts amounting to £1172 Is 4d were passed for payment. The estimates for the year were approved, and it was decided to notify the intention to strike a general rate of fourpence farthing in the £ and a hospital rate of one penny in the £. There being a sufficient balance in the special rate account to pay the Ashley Bridge loan interest, there was no necessity to strike a rate for that purpose. Mr Harold Matthews, of Dunedin, was appointed electrical engineer to the borough. The Ladies’ and Men’s Hockey Clubs and the North Canterbury Football Club were granted playing grounds on Dudley Park for the present season, the fees to be fixed later. The Town Clerk reported that Mr Roberts, consulting engineer, had written that the amount of the loan proposal for sewerage should be increased from £27,000 to £28.300 to allow for additional area not included in his previous estimate. The Valuation Department would need to amend the valuation on those sections that were partly in and partly out of the restricted rating area. As soon as this was done the application could be made to the Loans Board for permission to laise the loan. It was decided to meet representatives of the sports clubs using Dudley Park to-morrow evening to discuss the allocation of the receipts from admission to the park.
