RAILWAY COMPETITION IS UNFAIR, AVERS SHIPPING DIRECTOR.
(Special to the “Star.”) AUCKLAND, May 17. At the annual general meeting of the Northern Steamship Company, Mr Charles Rhodes, chairman of directors, said that water-borne cargo can always compete with other forms of transit, that is, if it is judged by economic standards.
“Just at present, however, we are faced by decidedly unfair competition on the part of Government railways,” he said. “Rates for transport by rail to coastal places have been reduced in some places to as much as one-third or one-quarter of what inland towns will pay for the same distance. “Taxpayers of New Zealand are thus forced to pay railway losses incurred by this absurd competition, designed apparently to injure every, trade and public service which the Government might be expected. to uphold for economic cheap transport is a service to the general public.
