LAY-READERS WILL HAVE SERMONS PRINTED.

Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, May 1. Difficulties encountered by lay readers in securing appropriate volumes of sermons for their use were referred to by speakers at to-day’s session of the Anglican General Synod. “I don’t think we are grateful enough for the work our lay readers do,” said Canon F. G. Ilarvie, of Hamilton, in moving that Archdeacon Meredith and Canon E. H. Strong be appointed a committee to compile annual volumes of sermons for the use of lay readers, and that General Synod guarantee any deficit in the expenses involved, up to £SO. “Very often,” added Canon Harvie, “lay readers are completely at a loss to know what they should do in the way of sermons. They often have to rely on antiquated sermons picked up from anywhere. It is felt that a volume should be produced in New Zealand for lay readers. Frequently they have to use a volume prepared for use in other parts of the world,' where conditions are totally different.”

Archdeacon Meredith mentioned that a volume of sermons had been prepared after the last General S3 r nod. “These sermons,” he gaid, amid laughter, “took only six minutes to read. The lay readers did not like them. I don’t know what the congregation thought.” (Laughter.) The resolution moved hy Canon Harvie was carried.
