SHOOTING SEASON STARTS TO-MORROW.
FISHERMEN PUT AWAY THEIR RODS TO-NIGHT.
As well as being an important day in Labour circles, Ma> r 1 marks the turn of the year for the sportsman. To-day is the last day of fishing, and man)' enthusiasts will put their rocs sadly away and rely for their thrills on tales of the “biggest fish I ever saw,” which, unfortunately, broke the tackle.
However, the man with the gun is full of excitement. Great are the plans for “the first,” and many the prayers that the weather will be a howling sou’-wester to make the ducks and swans fly lew.
Starting to-morrow, the open season for swans, grey ducks, spoonbill, and Canadian geese extends till July 31. Pukeko will be open for a fortnight, starting on Wednesday. For Paradise duck there will be a close season. Amongst shooters generally there has been a good deal of adverse comment on the day’s extra protection given to pukeko. Canadian geese will be open for the ordinary season. As they are now plentiful on Lake Ellesmere. good sport may be anticipated. They are also seen at times at the mouth of the Waimakariri.
Game of all descriptions is very plen tiful on Lake Ellesmere, and the numbers speak well of the work of the Acclimatisation Society’s ranger, Mr J. Digby
