MIDDLETON HUMP NOT TESTED YET WITH SPEEDOMETER TRUCK.

TRIAL will be given UNDER CONDITIONS OF normal WORKING

A denial that the tests made at Middleton yard were of a nature not to be found under actual working conditions was given by Mr R. S. Kent, Divisional Superintendent of Railways, to-day. The waggon which has been fitted with a speedometer was not a special one, said Mr Kent, and it had nqt been specially brought from Dunedin, although it might have come from as some new ones had recently -.been built at Dunedin. The waggon was of the same type as 750 others which were The only alteration -was in regard to the tyres 'of the waggon, which had been trued up in order to take the speedometer. The diameter, however, was well within the Departments limits. . . In regard to the tests, Mr Kent said that the waggon may have been given a run down the hump to sec that the working gear was in order, but it was certain that no tests would be made unless the waggon was treated as under actual working conditions. Probably, in order that the bearings might be warmed up. the waggon would be run to Ashburton and back and then put over the hump track. At present no official tests had been made.
