I ) ? 5 ■ I RELIEP SCHEME ABANDONED. WELLINGTON, April 30. The proposal to clear some thousands of acres of gum and pumico lands in the far North with unemployed labour has been abandoned. The Hon A. D. M’Leod, who inspected the areas, said that the scheme would be economically unsound. The department was now looking for land suitable for flax prodm-Hon. He considered that the unemployment position is becoming much less acute. SHORTAGE OT I’EED, WELLINGTON, April 30. Owing to the excessive dry spel! during the summer and autumn feed for dairy cows has become sea ret in the Waiuku district, South Auckland, farmers having to make inroads on their winter reserves. The Government has decided, after investigation, to arrange for free railage in cases where farmers have found difficulty in financing their requirements. WAIKATO RACES.
