COURT CANCELS SEA COOKS’ AWARD

ONLY ONE OTHER WAY, SAYS JUDGE: MAN THE SHIPS HELD UP.

(United Press Assn.—By Electric ' Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Received April 28, 11.3 a.m.) MELBOURNE, April 28. In the Arbitration Court Mr Tudehope, for the Marine Cooks’ Union, asked Judge Dethridge whether he thought the suspension of the award would lead to a settlement of the dispute, or whether there was no better way out. Judge Dethridge: There’s only one other way, that is for your men to man the- ships. You can then come forward for the redress of your grievances in an orderly way. Mr Tudehope: Then I suggest that the award be cancelled only as regards Huddart Parker’s, as the other companies are unaffected. Judge Dethridge: You cannot indulge in direct action against one respondent and at the same time continue to hold the benefits of the award. Mr Menzies, for Huddart Parker's: We could commission several ships by Monday if the union is ready to resume.

Judge Dethridge then announced the cancellation of the award.—Australian Press Association.
