CYCLIST DIED FROM DISEASE OF HEART.

A verdict that death was due valvular disease of the heart was returned by the Coroner (Mr E. D. Motley) at the resumed inquest to-day concerning the death of Andrew James Alexander Sandford Fox, who was found dead in Tuam Street on April 24. Fox was a married man, fifty-three years of age, with six children. Sergeant D. Hyland conducted the inquiry.

Constable Rowe said that lie fuund Fox on the footpath in Tuam Street with his bicycle alongside him. Fox was dead. In the opinion of the witness Fox had been cycling and had fallen from his bicycle.

Dr A. B. Pearson, pathologist at the Christchurch Hospital, who conducted a post-mortem examination, said that deceased showed pronounced valvular disease of the heart of a type which was apt to cause sudden death. The air passages were totally blocked by a piece of partially digested meat. Ilis opinion was that the man had a sudden heart attack, probably a fatal one, and that, in his efforts to get his breath, the meat obstructed his breathing. The Coroner returned a verdict io accordance with Dr Pearson’s evidence.
