Brighton Breezes

110 USE HOLDERS’ MEETING. The annual meeting of the New Brighton householders was held in the schoolroom on Monday evening. Mr F. D. Muirson presided over a small attendance. Tho balance-sheet showed a credit of £46 16s Sd. Jt was decided that the first consideration of the incoming committee should be to obtain a septic tank for the school. The secretary was instructed to forward a letter of appreciation to Mr D. G. Sullivan for his help in connection with the school. Mr A. W. Dunkley moved: "That any moneys collected in the room be devoted towards a school library, and certificates be given in lieu of prizes.” The motion was seconded and carried. The chairman stated that there was a mistaken idea among the mothers of some of the children attending the School that if their children had their teeth attended to at the school dental clinic they were accepting charity, l his was not the case. The headmaster, Mr Pierson, intimated that a meeting of mothers would be called in the near future to explain the matter to them. Motions of appreciation were carried to Mr and Mrs Pearson, members of the staff, and committee. The committee for the ensuing year is as follows:—Mr F. D. Muirson (chairman), Mr T. Robins (secretary), Mesdames Bellamy and Moses, and Messrs A. E. Lawry, J. Buxton, A. Hulrrje, L. W. Besley and W. Dean. PERSONAL. Dr Stevens has returned from his holidays and has resumed practice. Miss A. A. Skipworth is now residing in Fisher Street. *

A farewell social was given in the “Oasis” Tea Rooms on Tuesday to Mr Samuels, postmaster at the New Brighton Post Office, who has been transferred to Amberley. The Mayor, Captain A. W. Owles, in making a presentation -of an initialled travelling rug on behalf of the residents present, and also a silver-mounted tobacco pouch on behalf of the Post Office staff, spoke in eulogistic terms of Mr Samuels’s services. Mr Samuels suitably replied. The evening was spent in cards and musical items. Mr Samuels left the borough on Tuesday.

BRIGHTON PICTURES. The programme for next week at the New Brighton Pictures includes "The Gorilla.” to be screened on Tuesday, and “Frisco Sally Levy," on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. No pictures will be screened on Monda}'. “SLEE PIN G BEA U T V.” Much interest, is being shown in the forthcoming operetta, "The Sleeping Reality,” which is being produced in Joyland next Monday. The music is very bright and pretty and will be greatly helped by an orchestra from ChristChqrch. LADIES’ MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB. At the two practices held last Saturday and Tuesday the following scores Were registered Saturday: Mrs Moses 65, 69, wins the point for the Senior

Pendant; Mrs Park, 67. 61; Mrs Ball, 65. In the junior grade, Mrs Ragg 60, and Mrs Sprosen 65, 62, each win a point for the Junior Pendant. Other scores were: Mesdames Nicholls 62 Bishop 62, Tilleyshort 65, 61, M. Moses 60, Miller 62.

At Tuesday’s practice the scores were: Mrs Ball, 69, 67, Senior Pendant; Miss Park, 68, 63; Mrs Buschl, 66. 66; Mrs Harding, 62, 66; Mrs Moses, 64, 62. Junior grade -Mrs Burmeister, 63, 62, point for Junior Pendant and Tisdali Brooch; Mrs Sprosen, 61, 63; Mrs Bishop, 62; Mrs Nicholl 62; Mrs Ragg, 60; Mrs E. Diehl, 60. Next Tuesdav the first match in the winter tournament wil be fired against Cashmere.

NORTH BEACH NOTES

NORTH BEACH AND WAIMAIRI PROGRESS LEAGUE. A meeting of North Beach and Waimairi Progress League was held in the Lodge room, Bowhill Road on Saturday evening, Mr E. A. M. Leaver preThe New Brighton Borough Council wrote stating that the council intended to consider the league’s proposals for the beautifying and improvement of the OsbornC Terrace reserve, when the estimates were being considered. With regard to a statement in the letter, that the council intended to take steps to have Woodgrove Avenue cleaned up, the secretary reported that most of the property owners in this street were co-operating with the council and clearing at least their frontages and already the street presented a better appearance. A Waimairi ratepayer brought up the matter of sand drift in the countv side of Beach Road, and it was agreed on the motion of Mr D. Good to forward a letter of appreciation to the Waimairi County Council, concerning the beneficial effect of the scrub fence erected and to ask that further fences be erected and marram grass planted in order to prevent sand drift. The question of affiliation with the United Burgesses’ Association was discussed. Mr S. W. Brown, giving notice of his intention to move at the next meeting; "That the league cancel its affiliation with the United Burgesses' Association.” It was decided that future meetings be held on every fourth Monday, the next meeting to be held on Monday, May 28. GALA SOCIAL. A-social evening, to which past and present gala workers have been invited, will be held in the Peace Memorial Hall on Wednesday evening. NORTH BRIGHTON SCHOOL. There was a large atendance at the annual meeting of householders on Monday evening. Mr D. N. Adams presided. Mr S. S. Freeborne, secretary, presented the annual report, which showed that the teachers and residents had co-operated with the committee in many efforts for the benefit of the school and improvement of the grounds. The school had dropped a grade in consequence of the attendance lor the year ended September 30. This.

had created serious financial difficulties. The attendance for the past two quarters had been 241 and 249 respectively. The balance-sheet showed £SO raised by concerts, etc., total receipts being £lsl 4s 9d and expenditure £l4B 18s Sd. Two remits from the School Committee’s Association-were referred to the incoming committee. Owing to the attendance for last year averaging less than 240, nominations could be made at the meeting. Eighteen persons were nominated and as only nine were required. baliot papers were required to be issued to close on 100 householders ■ present. Misses West and Leaver assisted in this direction with typewriters. During the counting of the votes, Mrs Ross-Smith played the piano, tho?e present joining in community singing, whilst some indulged in dancing in the corridor. When the scrutineers returned the chairman announced the following elected: Messrs S. S. Freeborn, A. Florance, W. S. Bussell, E. A. M. Leaver, • Mrs S. Goring, Messrs R. Stringer, R. Parker, D. N. Adams and C. Dixon. On the committee meeting Mr E. A. M. Leaver was elected chairman, and Mr S. S. Freeborn secretary. It was decided to hold the monthly meeting on the second Wednesday in each month. •

RECHABITE LODGE. A meeting of the Star of New Brighton Tent, 1.0. R., was held in the lodge room, Bowhill Road, North Beach, on Tuesday evening, Brother E. A. M. Leaver, C.R., presiding. Sister G. Hastings, P.5.F.8., was present by invitation, and gave an interesting report of the district meeting recently held at Dunedin. A general discussion took place on the report, after which a hearty vote of thanks was passed to Sister Hastings. One new member was proposed. After the business, supper was served. MUNICIPAL BAND CONCERT. The New Brighton Municipal Band, under Conductor J. Nuttall, will (weather permitting) render the following programme dear the Peace Memorial Hall, North Beach, on Sunday afternoon, commencing at three o'clock:— March, “ Steadfast and True ; overtuie, “Le Diadem”; selection, “ Saxonhurst ; fantasia, “Jupiter”; intermezzo, “ Secrets selection, “ Alexandra march, “Joy and Life.” PERSONAL. Mrs J. C. Alabaster returned on Thursday from Invercargill. Mr and Mrs M’Donald (nee Miss M. Williamson), of Invercargill, have been spending a holiday at “ Waratah,” Osborne Terrace. Mrs N. M’Gillivray is still confined to her home through sickness. Mrs F. Hobbs, who has been staying with her daughter, Mrs 11. Philpott, has returned to the city. The Rev W. F. Knowles, who has been associated with the School Committee for some _ five years, declined nomination on this occasion for several reasons. At the meeting of householders on Monday evening, Mr Leaver referred to the services rendered by Mr Knowles to the school, and on his motion a hearty vote of thanks was passed. Mr Knowles briefly replied.
