BUSINESS FOR MONDAY’S MEETING OF CITY COUNCIL.
A considerable amount of routine business will come before the City Council at its meeting on Monday night, but it is not expected that many of the matters to be considered will prove very contentious. The principal matters to be dealt with are as folNew by-laws relating to the control and licensing of hoardings, including those erected prior to the coming into force of the present by-law, will be submitted for adoption. An application for the election of four new hoardings will be considered. The Town-planning Committee’s report deals with a number of subdivisions of land and also with an application to erect a shop right up to the building line of two streets. The condition of two houses erected under the Workers’ Dwellings Act is such that the attention of the architects who designed the houses is to be drawn to the matter. A scheme to form a riverside boulevard on both sides of the river Avon from Swann’s Road to Medway Street has been submitted by the city engineer, and the Works Committee will recommend that the council invite public subscriptions for carrying out the work. The Works Committee is recommending the council to apply to the Board of Health for a requisition enabling it to raise a loan under the Health Act for reticulating the Bromley district with water mains. The By-laws Committee is reporting the amount received from the petrol tax for the period ended March 31, 1925, and is recommending the council to earmark it to pay interest and sinking fund on the road scheme.
Tenders for printing the highways report have been received, and the tender of a local firm for 300 copies is being recommended for acceptance. New regulations relating to the prohibition of cars being parked in front of places of amusement prior to or during any performance will, be submitted for adoption. The question of the erection of lamps on the river banks will be considered. The future supply of electricity also will come up for consideratioxL The Works Committee is recommending the council to co-operate with the Riccarton Borough Council in forming Deans Avenue from North Park Road to Riccarton Road in bituminous pavement. The Works Committee has decided to confer with the Medical Officer of Health with a view to remedying the alleged nuisance in connection with the Smart’s Pond tip. The advisability* of purchasing a tripe-cleaning machine for the city abattoir will be considered.
