THE RUGBY GAME. RANFURLY SHIELD. The Canterbury Rugby Union is not to be allowed much peace so far as the Ranfurly Shield in concerned. South Canterbury submitted a challenge on Tuesday evening, and it is well known that Wairarapa, Auckland and Hawke's Bay, in the North Island, and Otago, in the south, will not rest satisfied until dates are fixed. The South Canterbury Union intimated in a letter to the Canterbury Union on Tuesday that a Ranfurly Shield challenge had been lodged with the New Zealand Rugby Union. Canterbury was asked to advise dates on which a match could be played. Mr S. F. Wilson: They are coming in hot and strong with challenges, but I think they ought to wait until the season gets a start. I can now see why Hawke’s Bay got so touchy over challenges. (Laughter.) The matter of arranging dates with South Canterbury and other challenging unions was left in the hands of the Canterbury delegates to the annual meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union.

CANTERBURY UNION. MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. The Canterbury Rugby Union met on Tuesday evening: present—Messrs A. E. M’Phall (chairman), A. Barrett, E. V. Phillips, A. Duggan, W. Maxwell, W. Britten, St J. J. Dunne, A. E. Flower, C. S. M’Cully, R. H. North, L. Thomson, J. K. Moloney, >R. W. Britton, S. F. Wilson and Dr W. S. Seed. A protest was received from the Albion Club regarding the referee's decision In reporting the third grade A match between Albion and Technical as a draw. According to the club the score should have been Albion 18 points (one converted try, two unconverted tries, one penalty goal, and a field goal), Technical 15 points (five unconverted tries). It was decided to forward the letter to the referee concerned in the game. INCONVENIENCE TO PLAYERS. Members drew attention to the inconvenience caused to players attending games at North Park, who were not allowed to bring their motor-cycles into the ground. Action was also being taken to prosecute any players who rode their motor-cycles into the park. It was decided to write to the Domains Board asking for permission for players to take their machines to the training shed. Mr Phillips brought up the matter of bicycles between the playing grounds at North Park. He said that there was such an accumulation of bicycles between the Merivale and Training College grounds in particular that one day there would be a serious accident. The chairman: You are going to put a pretty big job on to the referee, especially if one game starts before the other. . _ It was decided to write to the Referees’ Association asking that referees should endeavour to have all bicycles cleared from between the grounds during the currency of matches. HOCKEY JUBILEE GAME. The Canterbury Hockey Association wrote stating that a match had been arranged between Nelson and Canterbury for Saturday, May 26, in conjunction with the diamond jubilee celebrations. The association asked whether the match could be played as a curtainraiser on the Lancaster Park Oval. Mr Wilson: If we are taking part in the jubilee celebrations we will have a special match, I presume. The chairman pointed out that the •matter of the gate for the occasion was ! in the hands of the Finance Committee. Mr Wilson expressed opinion that ithe union had done a lot for hockey, but in view of the heavy financial obligations it would be hard to arrange a gate with the Hockey Association. “As a matter of fact I think the time has 'arrived when we will have to play our games irrespective of other sports fixtures,” he said. . , It was resolved to reply stating that the Union was facing a very heavy season, and that the full use of the oval at Lancaster Park would be required on the day mentioned.

TALKS ON RUGBY. The discussion between the Wireless Broadcasting Company and the Canterbury Rugby Union was settled so far as the first round of matches at Lancaster Park is concerned, when the company wrote thanking the union for the courtesy extended. The company also informed the union that facilities would ha granted a member of the union to broadca&t a series of talks on the ganie from the studio at intervals during the Se The* letter was received and the union resolved to avail itself of the offer of th Mr°Moloney said that Mr R. Masters had already given a talk, which had proved very interesting. EXCELLENT JUNIOR ENTRIES. The Competitions Committee reported that in all the grades there were 101 entries, as compared with 96 last season The committee had met to draw ut> "the restricted competitions during the week and excellent entries had been received. In the under-twenty section there were eight entries, as compared with seven last year, in the under-nineteen, eleven, as compared with ten, and in the under eighteen, seventeen, and fifteen and a half the entries were eight, - thirteen and six respectively, the same as in the previous season. There was a shortage of grounds, and the union would have to look out for more.

CONGRATULATIONS TO AUTHOR. The union decided to write to Mr R. Masters congratulating him on his fine publication in connection with the All Black tour of Australia, Britain, France and Canada in 1924-25. Members considered the book a very fine record of the tour. LANCASTER PARK. The Canterbury Hockey Association wrote stating that it was desirous of discussing with the Canterbury Rugby Union the possibility of getting the use of one of the back grounds at Lancaster Park for the coming season, and asked the union to receive a. deputatior, comprising Messrs W. Williamson and H. R. Sampson. , , . ... . It was resolved to reply pointing out that 'the union would require all its grounds at Lancaster Park this season, and the advances of a deputation would hardly influence the union in any decision it tnight edme to.

SATURDAY’S MATCHES. The big game on Saturday is Merivale versus Old Boys. Merivale made an impressive display In their match against Albion on Saturday, and give every indication of being a hard side to beat. It is seventeen years since they won the championship, though they have been runners-up on numerous occasions, particularly since the war. With a young lively team of forwards, and smart tricky backs, they should go far. Old Boys also have a youthful team. Though the forwards are somewhat on the light side, they are, nevertheless, very energetic, and on the present hard grounds will be seen to advantage. The Old Boys’ backs should be one of the soundest combinations in the competition, and will no doubt throw the ball about in their usual style. Christchurch make their first appearance of the season against Linwood. Last year’s champions have lost a number of their best players, particularly in the back division, M’Gregor, Robiliiard and Scrimshaw being absent with the All Blacks. Linwood showed much promise against Varsity last Saturday and are capable of bringing off a few surprises. Technical Old Boys are drawn to meet Varsity on the west ground. The students have a big bustling set of forwards who will keep their opponents busy when the grounds get softer. Technical are a young side who should build up as time goes on.
