Fashions and Furbelows

NOTES BY SPECIAL CONTRIBUTORS

SWIMMING EXERCISES. Thanks to their rhy’thmic use of the whole body and the necessity for deep, regular k breathing, swimming movements are unsurpassed for developing a beautiful figure and a fresh, clear complexion. In winter practise them daily, ly'ing across a pouffe or stool. Start by thrusting out both arms and legs- to their full extent, the arms together, with pal s ms downwards and forefingers touching, and the legs with toes pointing and well apart. Now slowly, in a wide sweep, extend the arms to the sides, level with the shoulders, turning the palms outwards, while making the sweep. This should be done very gradually. At the same time bring the separated legs together, still keeping them stretched. The breath, which should have been slowly inhaled during the first movement, begins to be exhaled very gradually during these movements. Be sure and keep your legs level with your body. Complete the circle made by the arms by bending the elbows in towards the sides of the body, still keeping them level with the shoulders, till the hands meet, and join in close under the chin. Simultaneously bend the 9 knees sharply outwards (not downwards), thus bringing the feet as close to the bod}' as possible. F'inish exhaling the breath, and you are in position to repeat the movements. Do them twelve times daily, in summer, in the water when possible. GREASE MARKS ON KID SHOES. Sprinkle some finely powdered French chalk over the grease marks on the shoes. Leave the chalk on for a day and then brush it off. If’the grease marks still remain repeat the process. If, however, this is still not very successful, dip a soft cloth in petrol (which is inflammable) and make a ring round the outside of the mark. Rub round and round towards the centre, and when the petrol, has dried the grease marks should have disappeared. FURS PLAY HIDE AND SEEK. Fancy is playing all sorts of pranks with furs. One of the newest surprises is the use of fur on sports coats and its -omission from afternoon coats. The manufacturer who launched this novelty is using on collars and cuffs flat trimmings which often develop into scarf arrangements. To replace fur trimmings on after-

noon models, tailored appliques are in favour. Black and beige occupy alone the colour gallery for formal coats. Browns, beiges and tweeds mixtures still characterise sports garments.
