OBITUARY.
R. S. FLORANCE. The death occurred in Christchurch on Tuesday night of Mr Robert Stone Florance, in his seve.nty-third year. He and Mrs Florance, who have been residing in the Auckland district, came to Christchurch recently for the jubilee celebrations, and his death will come as a shock to his many friends here.
The late Mr Florance was the son of Dr Florance, a very well-known doctor in the early days of Christchurch. Mr Florance was born in Portland, Dorsetshire, England, but he lost his mother three days after his birth. His father first visited New Zealand in the ’forties, but left his family to be educated at Home. In 1862 the late Mr Florance came with his father to New Zealand in the ship Mersey. Coming to Christchurch. he joined the
“Lyttelton Times” as an apprentice, being engaged on both the “Lyttelton Times” and the “Star.” His health broke down, however, and he forsook newspaper work and became articled to Mr Henry Augustus Bamford, barrister and solicitor. In due course he was admitted to the Bar. Mr Florance was married in 1882 to Miss Bamford, only surviving daughter of Mr John Dean Bamford. Mr Florance practised in Christchurch for a time, and in 1884 he left for the North Island, where he was engaged in his profession in Hawke's Bay for thirteen years. Later he was appointed a magistrate and carried out his work in various parts of New Zealand. After serving in many Government departments Mr Florance retired on superannuation a few years ago.
