GAVE WRONG NAME. AND BORROWED MONEY
DORIS EDE CONVICTED FOR FALSE PRETENCES
Doris Erie, a married woman, appeared before Mr 11. P. Lawry, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court this morning on two charges of false pretences. The story of the case was outlined by Chief Detective Carroll. “ On April 4,” he said, “ accused went to the office of Mr K. G. Archer, and to him she said that she was Miss Harris, sister of Harris, the builder. Her brother had given her a cheque for £7, which she had lost. She did not want her brother to know that she had been so careless. Would Mr Archer lend her £l. Mr Archer, who was a friend of Mr Harris, agreed to make the loan. The second charge dates back to February 8. On that occasion accused approached a bank manager in Sydenham, and. saying that she was Miss Harris, borrowed £1 to pay the fare of a girl who wanted to .go to Wellington.” Mr Tracy, appearing for accused, said that the case was a difficult one. Accused was living with her husband, who had not appeared. Accused had been convicted for similar offences before, but the present charges were comparatively trivial. When accosted, accused had offered to pay Mr Archer back his £l. Counsel suggested that accused would be properly punished if she were made to pay back the money. The Magistrate: Is her husband here ? The husband’s name was shouted in the Court, but he did not put in an appearance. The Magistrate: Not here? lie cannot take much interest in her!. After deliberation, the Magistrate convicted accused and ordered her to come up for sentence if called upon within twelve months.
