A distinction between the works of the Waimakariri River Trust and what could be termed “ an act of God ” was drawn by the clerk of the Eyre County Council in a letter to the meeting of the River Trust yesterday afternoon. The council wrote asking why £5 15s was deducted from the £ls that it was understood the trust was to pay in cash towards repairs for the Coutts Island washout. “ This council,” continued the letter. “ thinks that the £ls (if received) would have been only a meagre return towards all the cost that has been incurred through these washouts, which, the members of the trust must surely admit, were caused by the works put up by the trust, and can hardly be looked upon as entirely due to ‘an act of God.’ ” The trust decided to point out that the deduction was made to cover the cost of the cutting and carting of the scrub required.
