CHRISTCHURCH. (Before Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M.) NO PERMISSION. Robert James Duncan, for erecting a new building in Domett Street without permission in writing by the Christchurch City Council, was convicted and fined £3 and costs. CASE DISMISSED. A prosecution brought against W. Case (Mr Malley) alleging that he had deceived the public by “ topping ” tins of potatoes at an auction, was dismissed. REMANDED. On a charge of stealing a motor-cycle and side-car, valued at £9O, the property of W. Cunningham, Charles Edward Blacklock was remanded till April 24, bail being allowed at £SO and one surety of £SO. BY-LAW CASES. Fred William Cochrane was fined £3 and costs for using an unregistered motor-car. For failing to notify disposal of a motor-car, the New Zealand Farmers' Co-operative Association of Canterbury, Ltd., was convicted and ordered to pay costs. On a similar charge, Walter Stanley Wright was fined £1 and costs. NEW BRIGHTON BY-LAW CASES. For keeping unregistered dogs, Henry Coleman, Ralph M’Nish, and Mrs Ada Timms were each fined 10s and costs. Arthur Andrews was convicted and ordered to pay costs. Frederick Fuller was fined 10s and costs for riding a motor-cycle at night without a light. James Scott, John Gold, and Horace Church were each fined £1 and costs for riefing motor-cycles in a manner dangerous to the public. For driving without a license, John Boag Henderson was fined £1 and costs. For cycling on the footpath, Walter Hayes and William Hookham were each fined 10s and costs. Norman M’Nabb, for riding a motorcycle without a license, was fined 10s and costs. For speeding, he was fined £2 and costs. For hawking without a license, John Nicholson was fined 10s and costs. For driving without a license he was fined 10s and costs. LYTTELTON. (Before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. A first offender for drunkenness was fined 10s, in default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment. A female first offender on a similar charge was convicted and discharged on condition that she left Lyttelton. BREACH OF ORDER. For a second breach of his prohibition order, William Stone was fined £3, in default one month’s imprisonment. ON LICENSED PREMISES. D. T. Ilammill, who appeared on a charge of being found on licensed premises, the Royal Hotel, when such premises were required to be closed, pleaded not guilty. After hearing evidence the Magistrate said that he was not satisfied with the evidence and defendant would be fined £2 and costs. William Harrigan, on a charge of being found on the premises of the Canterbury Hotel after hours, pleaded not guilty. He was fined £2 and costs. Thomas Burgess pleaded not guilty to a charge of being found on licensed premises after hours. His defence was that he went into the hotel for a cigarette. Defendant was convicted and fined £2 and costs. For being found on the premises of the Canterbury Hotel, James Murton was convicted and fined £2 and costs. Robert Cowan, who pleaded guilty to being found on licensed premises, the Canterbury Hotel, was fined £l. LICENSING CASES. James Geddes, licensee of the Canterbury Hotel, who was charged with selling liquor during prohibited hours, pleaded guilty and was fined £2 and costs. “NUISANCE TO POLICE.” Charles E. Humphreys, licensee of the Royal Hotel, on a charge of exposing liquor for sale during prohibited hours, was convicted and discharged. On a further charge of selling liquor after hours he was fined £7 and costs. Sergeant M’Holrn stated that the defendant had been a nuisance to the police since he had been in Lyttelton owing to Sunday trading. In the present case he had admitted the charge.
