A vote of sympathy with the relatives of the late Major W. J. Hardham, V.C., was carried, members standing in silence. Major Hardham had done a. great deal for football in New Zealand. The sports officer of H.M.S. Dunedin wrote inquiring whether the ship’s club had any prospects of obtaining friendly games while in port. The club could field a team of junior or third grade standard. It was decided to arrange a match between the Dunedin and the High School Old Boys second grade team at the oval at Lancaster Park as a curtain raiser to the senior A grade fixture between Merivale and Albion on Saturday, the arrangements to be left in the hands of Dr Seed and Mr J. K. Moloney. “It is defeating the object of the grade,” said Mr Wilson, when the Competitions Committee reported that two teams from the Merivale Club had been entered in the senior B grade. He had no objection to the club entering two teams, but he though that the prin-

ciple was not right, because the senior B grade was too near junior standard and not close enough to senior standard as was originally Intended. It was pointed out that Merivale had to face great difficulty in providing games for players who were better than the junior standard and the only court* open was to enter two teams. The report, which included the fixtures for Saturday, was adopted. A telegram was received from W. J. Pareta, asking whether the Union would accept a Maori club in the competlThe matter was referred to the Banks Peninsula Sub-Union for a report. The executive of the Canterbury Football Association met last night; present—Messrs C. H. Bascand (chairman), W. E. Leadley, J. Burgess, M. Anderson, W. Duncan, E. E. Lancaster, F. Bennett, ,T. Jennings, N. Wardell, N. Jackson, H. Smyth, C. E. Keys, R. M’Lachlan and J. Stout. An apology for absence was received from Mr R. English. The se.cretp.ry reported that, following discussion at the last meeting, he had approached Kaiapoi soccer authorities with regard to re-establish-ing the Kaiapoi club. The information he had obtained from several sources did not bold out much • hope for the club’s consolidation. The meeting decided to hold the matter over. The secretary’s report stated that it was impossible to get a Kaiapoi team into the first grade competition. The Referees’ Association wrote pointing out that the numerical strength of active referees was not big, and stat> ing that if the executive did not take steps assisting the association some of the matches would have to go without Mr Leadley moved that a letter be sent to the clubs urging them to do what they could in the matter of recruiting referees. Mr Jennings: Not every Tom, Dick and Harry will suffice to referee a fourth grade match. It should also be pointed out to the clubs that good men are wanted. The referee should be willing and competent to explain the situations to the boys as those situations arise. “The trouble is that there is no real club association in any of the clubs,” said Mr R. B. Bunt, the secretary. “One club doesn’t hold a meeting from one year's end to the other. What is needed is for the Referees’ Association to have a re-organisation within itself.” Mr Keys: The St Albans Club has always had a good active membership, but the members don’t stay. That is because there no club life. After further discussion Mr Leadley’s motion was carried. The secretary of the Lyttelton Club wrote advising the executive that the lack of practice grounds and the drifting away of players made it impossible for the club to raise a team for the season. The Town Clerk wrote advising that a ground had been allotted the association in Richmond Park. The Wellington Association wrote inviting a senior representative team and a boys’ team to visit Wellington and play on the King’s Birthday. It was decided that it was impossible to send the teams. It was moved that the Westland Association be written to about the feasibility of a West Coast team visiting Christchurch to play Canterbury on the King’s Birthday. It was moved as an amendment by Mr Duncan that a Possibles v. Probables match be played on the King's Birthday. Mr Duncan said that in the association’s present financial condition no guarantee could be given for any match. The amendment was defeated, and the original motion carried. The resolution contained a suggestion that a public excursion be arranged for the date in question. The South Canterbury Association applied for a representative match at Christchurch on June 4. It was decided to hold the. question over. It was moved by Mr Leadley that the secretary be instructed to attend the conference of delegates to the New Zealand Football Association, and advocate that the interprovincial match arrangements be conducted on the same lines as were provided previously for the Brown Shield. Also, Mr Leadley moved that other centres be notified, and their co-operation invited. , Both motions were carried. DRAW FOR SATURDAY. First Grade A-. —Nomads v. .Western, at.
