LEAGUE OF NATIONS UNION HAS HAD A SUCCESSFUL YEAR.

The Christchurch branch of the League of Nations Union held its annual meeting last evening, the president, Mr W. T. G. Airey, being in the chair. In discussing the annual report, which recorded a successful year’s operations, the chairman said that a very real claim could be made to progress in the past year. There was, however, a great deal remaining to be done. The following officers were elected:— Patron, Archbishop Julius; vice patron, the Rev J. K. Archer, Mayor of Christchurch; president, Mr W. T. G. Airey; vice-presidents, Bishop West' Watson, Mrs T. E. Taylor and Mr R. M. Laing; honorary secretary, Mr A. H. Acheson; honorary treasurer, Mr A. F. Johnson; council. Mrs A. I. Fraser, J.P., Mrs Richards, the Revs J. Robertson, A. B. Kilroy, W. Greenslade. A. Liversedge and Dr V. Geaney. Messrs C. R. N. Mackie, Donald Grant, E. P. Gill. G. Lawn and G. S. Troup. In his address the president referred to the increased activities of the smaller nations, which tended to reduce the secret meetings held by delegates of the greater Powers, and equalise the footing on which the League was conducted. The Educational Conference was an exceptionally fine thing, whose work had done wonders. He discussed armaments, \-oicing appreciation of Britain s action in not competing fully with the naval building programme of the United States of America. All nations were sincere, but they approached things from different standpoints, and that made agreement very difficult. The idea was to abolish war. except that it could be used for the suppression of a covenant breaker.
