Miss Eileen Bennington left Christchurch this morning for the West Coast. Mrs H. Rothenberg is spending a holiday at Sumner. Mr and Mrs E. .T. Kiely (Greymouth) are staying at the Clarendon Hotel. Mr and Mrs Bruce Duncan have returned to Christchurch from Rotorua. Dr and Mrs Alfred Sandston intend leaving for England on March 17. Mrs H. Wood is visiting her sister, Mrs E. L. Barnes, Palmerston North. Mrs R. Laidlaw. Otago, is visiting her mother. Mrs F. G. Gibson, Papanui Road. Mrs F. Furneaux, who was visiting her mother in Lyttelton, has returned to Wanganui. Miss Pennethorne. of England, who was recently in Wellington and Christchurch, is now visiting Hawke’s, Bay. Mrs E. C. Sutcliffe, of Sprcydon, Christchurch, is paying a holiday visit to Wellington. Dr and Mrs L. S. Talbot, of Timaru, and Mr and Mrs J. B. Waters, of Dunedin. are among the recent arrivals staying at the Clarendon Hotel. Miss Davis and Miss Schmidt, who are. touring New Zealand, leave Christchurch for the north this evening. Mr and Mrs IT. De Cpsto. of Gisborne, who were the gtiests of Mrs 11. J. Ballin, Leinster Road, have returned to the north. Mrs W. Herron and her little daughter and Miss W. Simpson arc spending a fortnight’s holiday with Mrs P. Frew, Ashburton. Mr and Mrs J. R. Evans have, returned from the West Coast, having made the round trip to Nelson, Picton and the Franz Josef Glacier. Miss Ryan. Scargill, has returned to bet home after a holiday spent with her brother and aunt, Mrs J. B. Ryan, Kilbirnie, Wellington. Guests at the United Service Hotel include Mrs W. IT. Gibson (Wellington), Mrs F. J. Millton and Miss G. L. Millton (Orari), and Mr. Mrs and Miss Hounsey (Hoylake, England). Miss Doris Wright, “ Wai Taha, ’ The Peaks, ITawarden, leaves to-day for tne West Coast, where she will be the guest of Mrs IT. G. Carter, Kamaka, Greymouth. The engagement is announced of Ruby, onlv daughter of Mr and Mrs J. S. Hardv, to William, second son of Mr and the late Mrs A. Mikkelson, both of Christchurch. Miss Phyllis Smith returned to Christchurch this morning, and left by the first express for Dunedin, en route for Sydney -and Melbourne. Mrs R. Acton Adams, of Dunedin, arrived in Christchurch from the north this morning and has returned to the south.

Mrs Fred Cowper returned to Christchurch from Dunedin yesterday. Mrs Cowper participated in the Otago croquet tournament and with her partner, Mrs T. Horn, was successful in winning the handicap doubles.

Miss Card (Mayoress of Featherston), who was in Christchurch to attend the funeral of the late Rev Mother M. Mechtildes, has returned north, accompanied by her niece, Miss Ila Card.

Mrs C. P. Agar, of Christchurch, and her sister, Miss L. Isles, have returned from a trip to Rotorua and Auckland, and are at present staying with Mrs A. E. Carver, of Woburn Road, Lower Hutt.

Mr and Mrs C. B. Massey, of “Bella Vista,” Stoke Street, Sumner, are visiting the West Coast and purpose motoring back from Hokitika to Arthur’s Pass, spending a few days at Otira and Arthur’s Pass en route.

Staying at Warner’s Hotel are Mrs Slansfield (Auckland), Miss L. Cornish and Miss D. Roston (Coonambie, N.S.W.), Miss M. Barrie (Wellington), Mr and Mrs W. Taine (Dunedin), Miss I. Crouch (Cambridge), and Mr and Mrs J. Samuels (Auckland).

At a meeting of the Phillipstown Kindergarten Dance Committee, held recently, it was decided to hold the dances weekly through the current year. The opening dance, to be held at the Automobile Hall, will take the form of a grand carnival dance. Mr Wells's orchestra of five instruments will supply the music. Tile entire proceeds of these dances is used in the upkeep of the Phillipstown Free Kindergarten.

Recent arrivals at. the Hotel Federal include: Mr and Mrs Sinclair. (New Plymouth), Miss Colver (Timaru), Misses P. and R. Perkins (Invercargill), Madame. Florry Roscoe (Wellington). Mrs G. Bundy and Mrs W. Birnie (Ashburton), the Rev Maitland Ellis (Dunedin), Mr L. T. Martin and Mr E. Nester (Greymouth), Miss J. Runciman (Dunedin), ?\lrs A. E. Clark (London). Mr 11. Preston (Wellington) and Mrs W. E. Evans (Waimate).

The monthly meeting of the Sydenham W.C.T.U. was held in the Methodist Schoolroom, Brougham Street, last week. The president, Mrs Odell, presided over a good attendance. Mrs Gilmour who had been an energetic worker in the North Invercargill branch, was warmly welcomed as a member of the branch. She thanked the members for their cordial reception. It was decided to postpone the church parade to a more suitable date. A discussion took place as to a suitable meeting place for the year and the Baptist schoolroom, Colombo Street, was decided on. The president announced that a meeting of young people was being held when Miss M'Lay, Dominion organiser, would give an address in order to trv and form a Young People’s branch in Sydenham. Several remits to the Napier Convention were read and discussed. .Afternoon tea was served by the social committee.
