James M’Callan and Frederick Arnold, who were charged in connection with the Hedges case, were sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, and fined £SO. The defence urged that it was- a clumsy attempt at a hoax while under the influence of liquor.—Aust. and N.Z. Press Assn. Two men were arrested in the flat of Mr Mitcheil-Hedges, the explorer, and charged with attempting to obtain £IOOO by false pretences. The prosecution alleged that they offered to influence the jury in the libel case in which Mr Mitcheil-Hedges was the plaintiff by the payment of £IOOO. Mr MitcheilHedges informed the police.
