The dream of four-day American t.rans-Atlantic liners is reported to be a step nearer realisation to-day with the formation of tlfe Trans-oceanic Corporation of the United States, which, 1t is said, is composed of a group oT business men who are prepared to stake £10,000,000 on the venture, states the New York correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph." All the plans, however, are contingent upon the mere chance of Congress authorising a loan, at a "moderate rate of interest," of £18,000.000,, and granting a long-term mailcarrying contract. The United States Shipping Board at present has a construction loan fund of £14,000,000, but it is not believed that any part of it could be legally used as planned by Lire new company, so that fresh legislation would have to be passed by Congress in order to get the money. Mr Lt Wilder, one of the moving spirits of the new company, will outline the plans of the United States Shipping Board this month. They include the construction of six 35,000-ton 900 ft liners, with a speed of 33 knots, drawing 35 feet of water, and accommodating 800 passengers. Mr Wilder will urge the Government to finance these four-day liners to the extent of 75 per cent of their cost, and to amend the Mail Contract Act so as to give American ships a preference. N.Z.
