PROPOSAL MADE TO FORM NATIONAL PARK AT ARTHUR’S PASS.
At yesterday's meeting of the Christchurch Beautifying Association the question of establishing a national park at Arthur’s Pass was brought up by Mr R. B. Owen. He said that thirty years ago the matter had been proposed by the association, but nothing was done. Dr Cockayne had taken a great interest in the proposal. Mr Owen urged the need for having an area made into a national park. At present, he said, there was not even a ranger there, and the number of people who visited the place on excursions were destroying the native bush and plants. Mr Owen said that a meeting would be called in a few days, when it was to be hoped that the Government would be asked to form a national park. He moved—“ That this' association supports the setting up of a board of control for the establishment of a national park at Arthur’s Pass and the head of the Waimakariri River, including Lake Minchen.”
The motion was seconded by Mr T D. Lennie and carried.
