CHRISTCHURCH CLUB HOLDS ANNUAL MEETING

Th#> annual meeting of the Christchurch Golf Club was held last evening, the president, Mr H. O. D. Meares, being in the chair. There was a big attendance of members.

The annual report and balance-sheet, which have been previously published, were adopted. In moving the adoption of the report, the president said that the club was to be congratulated on the state of the course and the club’s affairs during the past year. Those in charge were to be thanked and congratulated. It was a pleasure to take visitors round the links, and hear their comments. Thanks to their efforts, and those of “ our sportsman friend, Mr Sidey,” there had been a great number of players going round the course after office hours, and inter-

est in the game and the standard of play had improved. It was very pleasing that two members, Messrs r>. Grant and E. M. Macfarlane, had been selected to represent the Dominion in the Kirk-Windeyer Cup matches. The

club house was a big success, and the contractors and architects were to be congratulated. Mr T. W. Woodroffe, the club captain, was to be thanked for the work he had done, both as honorary " clerk of the works,” and in constructing the parking place. Seconding the motion, Mr Woodroffe said that there was no doubting the fact that the standard of golf was improving. That applied to the rank and file as well as the top notchers. If twelve top players were taken from the Christchurch Club, they could beat a. similar team from any club in New Zealand. The prizes won in the club’s competitions for 1927 were presented by the president. Brittan; auditor, Mr Denys Hoare. PROFESSIONAL TOURNEY HELD AT TIMARU. (Special to the “ Star.**) TIMARU. February 23. The professional tournament was continued a.t the Highfield golf links today. The weather was dull, but suitable to golf. Two rounds of the South Canterbury championship were played, and were productive of some interesting displays. In the morning, G. B. Forrest (Timaru) covered the links in 71. He was bettered in the afternoon by R. C. Butters (Miramar), who returned a 70. In conjunction with the championship event, the Myers Challenge Cup match was held, and resulted in a win for Butters, who returned a score of 143 for the thirty-six holes over which the match was played. Butters also won the second stroke handicap of thirty-six holes, returning a card of 145. The tournament will be concluded tomorrow. To-day’s results:—
