SHIELD TENNIS AT WELLINGTON.
WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE UNFAVOURABLE. (Special to the “Star.”) WELLINGTON, February 24. The weather is cold and overcast to-day. The courts are slow’ but play will proceed at the discretion of the Canterbury team. Failing play to-day, it is possible that the remaining Wilding Shield matches will be combined with the inter-provincial play on Saturday, and if rain interferes the team w’ill remain till Monday. D. F. Glanville arrived by train from Auckland this morning. lie had good tennis up there, but says that the Remuera courts have not a green blade of grass owing to the shortage of w’ater. Misses Speirs and Wake, Mrs Beale, Miss Andrew and Miss Johnston had a smooth trip. The first four are staying at the Grand Hotel and Miss Johnston with a friend. The team received several cheery telegrams of congratulation and are in fine fettle. Glanville got first news of the first day’s victories while still in his sleeping car on the express and was highly delighted. The ladies learned the full results when Mr Browning met them on the wharf today. The prospects are that play may be delayed for an hour to-day, but Walker should beat M’Gill, Angus should beat N. C. Wilson, and Ollivier should beat Malfroy. Whether Seay can beat France is problematical as France played a great game against Ollivier. Ollivier is returning on Monday night and Seay on Wednesday.
