HUMAN SACRIFICES ON LAVISH SCALE.
AMAZING DISCOVERIES MADE AT UR OF THE CHALDEES IN TWO VERY ANCIENT ROYAL TOMBS By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright.—A.P.A. & “Sydney Sun" Cable. (Received February 24, 9.25 a.m.) LONDON, February 23. EVIDENCE of human sacrifices on a lavish scale have been found in two more Royal tombs discovered at Ur of the Chaldees. The tombs date from the Fourth Millennium before Christ. The builders were apparently familiar with the construction of arches, which the Western world did not adopt until 3000 years later. Against the foot of the King’s grave were eleven bodies of women, wearing rich headdresses covered with gold lapis and cornelian. Two ranks of soldiers guarded the entrances, their copper helmets still on the crushed skulls. Queen Shubad’s tomb is the richest yet found. She had ten gold finger rings, a cloak entirely covered with heads and fastened at the neck with big gold pins, to which were attached lapis cylinder seals. Alongside were a silver pair of cockleshells, containing toilet paints and a set of eighteen fluted tumblers.
