A pathetic story was told at Marylebone Police Court, when John William Hammond, aged 60, head postman at the Belsize Road office, Kilburn, pleaded guilty to stealing a postaf packet containing 10s. Mr Fraser, prosecuting, said that Hammond had 36 years’ service. He could have retired, but had been kept on at his own request. As a result of this case he had lost a gratuity of £390 and a pension of £2 15s a week. His arrest came as such a shock to his Wife that it killed her. Hammond was earning £5 11s 2d a week. “You have been punished enough,” said Mr Halkett, the magistrate, in binding Hammond over. Ilammond said he had never otoien anything before.
