February 9 s The towing launch Dauntless was • totally destroyed by fire off Marae- '* tai reef early on Wednesday moriing, when towing a barge loaded with shingle. from Ponui to Auckland. The J loss is estimated at about £6OO. h When off Maraetai reef. Captain Cole, e who was then on deck, noticed smoke e issuing frpm the engine-room. On ine vest.igating he found that a fire had h broken out. The flames spread rapidly. Captain Cole cut the Dauntless s adrift from the barge, and headed the 5 - launch at full speed for the reef. He s succeeded in running the craft aground before the water commenced t to pour into it. The launch was burned I to the water’s edge, s -■■■
