GIRLS THROWN INTO STREETS.
CHINESE OFFER YOUNG CHILDREN FOR SALE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Aus. and N.Z. Cable Association. SHANGHAI, February 9. Famine-stricken families in the Shantung Province are offering to sell their daughters for five dollars. Many starving children have been thrown away, buyers not being forthcoming, according to missionaries, who are appealing for assistance to stave off the death by starvation of 60 per cent of the population. Large financial grants have been made by' the Japanese Government and American relief societies. Huge gifts of grain also have been sent from Manchuria, special trains carrying supplies, in order to save millions from a lingering death. The famine is the worst in the his--1 tory of the province. Those people who possess money are rapidly migrating to Manchuria. Sickness and disease are spreading, and crops have not been planted. Thus immediate alleviation of the situation is unlikely.
